Trump, Paris and RBS Funding Trident
A new daily series of ‘postcard’ micro blogs: a random selection of the best of the web in under 250 words.
Fears that The Donald is a launchpad for a new crypto fascist movement in the USA look sadly vindicated with this footage from recent rallies ‘Trump Supporters Filmed Viciously Punching and Kicking Black Lives Matter Protester at Rally’.
As the drums of war beat louder Adam Shatz has the best piece I have read on post-Paris France at the London Review of Books (‘Magical Thinking About ISIS’). ‘Même pas peur’ declare Parisians, as the Lebanese have since the 1970s. But ISIS, Shatz writes: “has taunted survivors with threats of future attacks, as if its deepest wish were to provoke violent retaliation…Already traumatised by the massacres in January, France appears to be granting that wish.” ‘Nous sommes dans la guerre’ as François Hollande has declared.
Speaking of war, the ever-excellent Ferret cover ‘Don’t Bank on the Bomb’, a new report compiled by the Dutch peace organisation Pax. “It’s time the biggest Scottish bank, RBS, stopped financing the companies making Trident. While Scotland is trying to get rid of weapons of mass destruction, RBS is trying to make money on them.” On the same subject, it’s not really possible to respond to the eye-popping stupidity of Chris Grayling’s remarks about Faslane. Meanwhile there are growing worries that the SNP’s position on war in Syria is looking ‘deliberately vague’.
But if fascism grows in America and Marine Le Pen relishes upcoming elections in December, Freedom has coverage of the farce of Silhan Ozcelik’s imprisonment. She is the first Britain to be convicted of trying to fight against ISIS. This country is crazy.
